Word scrambles to make, print and solve

Science Unscramble Words and Animal Word Scramble

Pick an animal or science topic, then unscramble the words online or print a worksheet with an answer key.

This free science unscramble tool shows jumbled letters and asks you to rearrange them into the correct word. It includes science lists for Space, Plants, Human Body, Earth Science, Weather Science and Ocean, plus Chemistry Basics under More lists, so you can run a science scramble word puzzle in a few clicks. The Animals list covers animal unscramble puzzles for younger learners. Each puzzle can be solved online or printed as a worksheet. Everything runs in your browser with no account or sign-up, and it works on phones and tablets. You can also type your own vocabulary to build an earth science word scramble or any other unit set.

How to use the Animal Word Scramble

  1. Under Word source, click Topic list. Pick a chip such as Animals, Space or Plants. The last chip, Mix of these, uses all of the page’s lists together. For other lists, open More lists.
  2. To use your own words instead, click My words and type them into Your words. Put one word or phrase on each line, or separate them with commas or semicolons.
  3. Set Number of words from 5 to 40.
  4. For topic lists, set Difficulty to Easy, Medium, Hard or Any length. To use one word length only, set Letters per word to a number from 4 to 8.
  5. Set Mixing to Shuffle all letters or the easier Keep first and last letter.
  6. Set Hint to No hint, First letter, First and last letter or Number of letters. Picture is only available on the picture lists for kids.
  7. Type each answer into its box and press Enter or Check. Press Hint to reveal one more starting letter each time, or press Show answer.
  8. To print, click Print / Save PDF. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF if you want a file. Set the worksheet title, paper size, columns, font size, copies and whether to include an answer key page.

Turn on Word bank to show every answer in a jumbled list under the puzzle. Use New puzzle to get a new scramble with the same settings. Copy link saves every setting and the puzzle number, so the same puzzle can be reopened later.

How do word scrambles help learn science vocabulary?

Unscrambling a word means looking at every letter and thinking about how the term is spelled. This helps learners remember technical words such as mantle, ligament or pollen, because they must build the spelling rather than just recognise it.

The tool follows a few rules when it scrambles a word. The scrambled letters are always different from the original word. A scramble is never another real English word made from the same letters, so HEART is never shown as EARTH. For words of 4 or more letters, at most half of the letters stay in their original place when possible. A phrase such as candy cane is scrambled one word at a time, and the space stays where it is.

Here is an example from the tool. With Shuffle all letters, ELEPHANT can appear as ALNHPTEE. With Keep first and last letter, the same word can appear as ELANPEHT, where only the middle letters have moved. Hints work the same way. First letter shows e_______, and First and last letter shows e______t.

A useful way to solve is to place the letters you can see clearly first, then use a hint only when you are stuck. Start with Keep first and last letter and move to Shuffle all letters as the learner improves.

Can I use my own unit words?

Yes. Click My words and type your unit vocabulary into Your words. You can enter up to 200 entries, each up to 30 characters long. Letters, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are allowed.

If an entry cannot be used, the tool lists it with the reason. The reasons include too long, other characters, fewer than 2 letters, already in the list, over 200 entries, or cannot be scrambled into a different order. Check that list before you print.

Words you type are not checked against a dictionary. Only the spelling you enter is used as the answer. The answer key includes every word, so it is a quick way to check a class set.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a science vocabulary word scramble for a unit on space, plants or the body?

Click Topic list and choose Space, Plants or Human Body. If your unit uses different terms, click My words and type them in. Then set the number of words and select Print / Save PDF.

Is there an animal word scramble for kids?

Yes. The Animals list has 50 words, including elephant, giraffe and kangaroo. For younger learners, use Easy difficulty and Keep first and last letter. Picture hints are only available on the kids’ picture lists, which have an emoji for every word.

Where do I find answers for science unscramble worksheets?

Turn on Include an answer key page before printing. The key appears after each copy and lists the scrambled letters and the answer. To print only the key, click Print answer key only. For on-screen puzzles, use Show answers or Reveal all.

Can I print a different version for each student?

Yes. Set Copies from 1 to 30. Each copy has the same words in a different order, with different scrambles, labelled Version 1, Version 2 and so on.

Do I need an account to use the science unscramble tool?

No. There is no account or sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser.

What if a student types a different real word with the same letters?

The tool accepts it if it uses exactly the same letters. For example, ANGLE counts as correct when the list word is ANGEL, and the message names the list word. This applies to 341 of the 1,744 single-word entries.
