Word scrambles to make, print and solve

Christmas Word Scramble

Unscramble Christmas, winter and holiday words online, or print the sheet with an answer key for a class or party.

A Christmas word scramble is a puzzle of holiday words with their letters mixed up, and this free tool turns holiday words into scrambled letter puzzles that you can print or solve on screen. Pick a word list or type in your own words, and the tool shuffles the letters of each one. It runs in your browser with no account or sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded.

The page has four lists. Christmas, Christmas for Kids and Christmas Traditions use holiday words, and Winter gives you a wintery puzzle with no Christmas words. Each puzzle is random, so “New puzzle” gives you a fresh set of scrambles with the same settings. The tool works on phones and tablets, and printing works from any browser.

How to make a Christmas word scramble

  1. Under Topic list, tap a chip such as Christmas. Open More lists to see every list on the site.
  2. To use your own words instead, choose My words and type them into Your words. Put one word or phrase per line, or separate them with commas or semicolons.
  3. Set Number of words from 5 to 40. The default is 12, which fits a party table well.
  4. For a topic list, choose a Difficulty and a Letters per word setting if you want a fixed length.
  5. Choose Shuffle all letters for a full challenge, or Keep first and last letter for an easier one.
  6. Pick a Hint setting: No hint, First letter, First and last letter, or Number of letters.
  7. Set the Worksheet title, Paper size, Columns, Font size and Copies. Turn on Include an answer key page if you want one.
  8. Select Print / Save PDF, then choose Save as PDF in the print dialog. Use Print answer key only if you need a spare key for the person running the game.

Turn on Word bank to list all answers in mixed order under the puzzle. Select Copy link to save your settings and puzzle number so the same puzzle reopens later.

Christmas word scramble with answers: how does it work?

Every puzzle can show its answers. Select Show answers online, or use Show answer on a single word. For a printed sheet, turn on Include an answer key page, or select Print answer key only.

Scrambles follow fixed rules. The scrambled letters are always different from the word, and the scramble is never another real English word made of the same letters, so HEART is never shown as EARTH. For words of four or more letters, at most half the letters stay in their original place when possible. Phrases such as candy cane are scrambled word by word, and the space stays. With Shuffle all letters, ELEPHANT becomes ALNHPTEE. With Keep first and last letter, only the middle letters move, so ELEPHANT becomes ELANPEHT.

Online checking also accepts other real words. If you type a different word made of exactly the same letters, it counts as correct. For example, ANGLE is accepted for ANGEL. This applies to 341 of the 1,744 single-word list entries. Words you type yourself are not checked against a dictionary.

Is there a Christmas word scramble for adults?

Yes. The Christmas Traditions list has 45 longer words for adults, such as poinsettia, nutcracker, mistletoe, gingerbread, eggnog, wassail, yuletide, advent and nativity. To make it harder, set Difficulty to Hard (8+ letters), or set Letters per word to 8 so only 8-letter words are used.

Christmas Traditions is also good for mixed ages: older players get words like wassail and yuletide while children use the Christmas for Kids list on their own sheet.

If a list has too few words of the chosen length, the tool adds words from other lists in the same group and shows an info line to say so. Keep Shuffle all letters selected for the hardest version, since it moves every letter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add my own Christmas words?

Yes. Select My words and type up to 200 entries, each up to 30 characters long. Letters, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are allowed. Any entry that cannot be used is listed with the reason, such as too long or already in the list.

Can I make a winter word scramble without Christmas words?

Yes. The Winter list has 46 words, including snow, frost, blizzard, sled, skates, mittens, fireplace and cocoa, and none of them are Christmas words. Choose it under Topic list like any other list.

What are some Christmas party game ideas with a word scramble?

Print one copy per guest by setting Copies. Each copy has the same words in a different order with different scrambles, so no two guests get the same sheet. Set a timer and let the first person to finish win.

You can also play on a phone or tablet. Guests can select Check all when they think they are done. The tool shows the time taken once every word is solved.

Can I print a Christmas word scramble as a worksheet?

Yes. Set Paper size to Letter or A4, choose 1 or 2 Columns, and pick Normal or Large Font size. Select Print / Save PDF and choose Save as PDF in the browser’s print dialog.

Does the Christmas word scramble work on a phone?

Yes. It works on phones and tablets. You can solve each word by typing in its answer box, using Check, Hint or Show answer.
