Fall Word Scramble
Unscramble autumn and harvest words online, or print a fall word scramble with its answer key.
Fall Word Scramble is a free tool that builds fall and autumn word scramble puzzles, which you can solve on screen or print. You pick words from the Fall & Autumn list, the Thanksgiving list, or the Halloween for Kids list, or type in your own. Each word’s letters are jumbled, and you get a new puzzle with each press of New puzzle.
It runs in your browser. There is no account and no sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded. It works on phones and tablets, and printing works from any browser.
Use it for a classroom warm-up, a harvest party game, a family activity, or homework. The fall list includes words such as pumpkin, acorn, orchard, hayride, and migrate. Everything you make here is free to use in class or in products you sell, such as Etsy printables or Teachers Pay Teachers resources.

How to make a fall word scramble
- Choose your words. Under Topic list, select Fall & Autumn. To use all three lists at once, choose the Mix of these chip. To use your own words, open My words and type them in the Your words box, one per line or separated by commas or semicolons.
- Set Number of words. Pick a value from 5 to 40. A new puzzle starts with 12.
- Set Difficulty (topic lists only): Easy (3–5 letters), Medium (5–7 letters), Hard (8+ letters), or Any length.
- Set Letters per word if you want a fixed length from 4 to 8. This uses only single words.
- Choose Mixing. Shuffle all letters is the standard setting. Keep first and last letter is easier because only the middle letters move.
- Choose a Hint: No hint, First letter, First and last letter, or Number of letters.
- Set the print options: Worksheet title, Name and date line, Instructions line, Paper size, Columns, Font size, Copies, and Include an answer key page.
- Print or save. Press Print / Save PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print dialog. To print only the answers, press Print answer key only.
- Solve on screen (optional). Type into each answer box and press Enter or Check; Hint gives another starting letter.
Press New puzzle to get a fresh scramble with the same settings. Copy link saves every setting and the puzzle number, so the same puzzle opens again later. Your own words are stored in the part of the link after the #.
How do I make a fall word scramble with answers?
Turn on Include an answer key page, and each copy gets an answer page after it. To show answers on the same sheet, turn on Word bank, which lists every answer in mixed order under the puzzle.
The answer page lists each scrambled word next to its answer, so you can check a sheet quickly. Each copy has the same words in a different order with different scrambles, so students working side by side get different puzzles.
What makes an autumn word scramble easy for kids?
Set Difficulty to Easy (3–5 letters) and Mixing to Keep first and last letter. That leaves the first and last letters in place and moves only the middle letters, so the word is easier to see. Add a First letter hint for an extra starting point.
The tool follows a few scrambling rules. A scramble is always different from the word. It is never another real English word made of the same letters, so HEART is never shown as EARTH. For words of 4 or more letters, at most half of the letters stay in their original place when possible. Phrases are scrambled one word at a time, and the space stays.
Which fall words work for a harvest party or class?
The Fall & Autumn list has 46 words, including harvest, pumpkin, scarecrow, acorn, squirrel, apple, cider, orchard, bonfire, sweater, rake, maple, hayride, cozy, and migrate. Set Number of words to match how long your activity lasts.
Longer words are harder. For example, SCARECROW can be shown as WRCECASOR when all letters are shuffled. Set Letters per word to a fixed length if you want every word to be the same size. Phrases such as leaf pile are not used in fixed-length puzzles because those use only single words.
Can I mix fall and Thanksgiving words?
Yes. Choose the Mix of these chip, and the puzzle draws from all three lists on this page together: Fall & Autumn, Thanksgiving and Halloween for Kids. The chips pick one list at a time, so Mix of these is the way to combine them.
The Thanksgiving list has 44 words, including turkey, pilgrim, feast, gravy, stuffing, cranberry, cornucopia, and mayflower. If a fixed letter length leaves a list short of words, the tool adds words from other lists in the same group, and an info line tells you so.
