- To solve on screen, type each answer into its box and press Enter or click Check. Click Hint for one more starting letter, or Show answer if you are stuck. Use Check all or Reveal all for the whole puzzle.
Turn on Word bank (answers in a jumbled list) to show every answer in mixed order under the puzzle. It is off by default. Uppercase letters is on by default. Click Copy link to save all your settings and the puzzle, so the same puzzle reopens from the link.
Is there an easy Halloween word scramble for kids?
Yes. Choose the Halloween for Kids list, which has 44 short words such as bat, boo, owl, candy and treat. Then set Difficulty to Easy, which uses words of 3 to 5 letters, and set Mixing to Keep first and last letter. Only the middle letters move, so a child can see how each word starts and ends while working out the rest.
Hints help too. First letter shows the opening letter, so GHOST appears as g____. First and last letter shows g___t. Setting Letters per word to exactly 4 gives only four-letter words.
How are the letters scrambled so the puzzle still works?
Every scramble follows a few rules. The mixed letters always differ from the original word, so no word is shown unchanged. The scramble is never another real English word made from the same letters, so HEART will never appear as EARTH. For words of four or more letters, at most half the letters stay in their original place when that is possible. This stops the scramble from giving the answer away, so even a short word like GHOST is mixed well rather than shown almost in order. Phrases such as candy cane are scrambled one word at a time, and the space stays where it is.
Here are real examples. With Shuffle all letters, PLANET can become NPTALE and PUMPKIN can become KPNMPUI. With Keep first and last letter, PUMPKIN becomes PUKMPIN. The P and N stay put, and only the middle letters move.
The solver also accepts other answers. If you type a different real word made from the same letters, it counts as correct, and the message names the list word. For example, ANGLE counts when the list word is ANGEL. 341 of the 1,744 single-word list entries have such alternates.
Frequently asked questions
Can I print a Halloween word scramble with answers?
Yes. Turn on Include an answer key page, and an answer page is added after each copy, listing the scrambled letters and the answer. To print only the answers, click Print answer key only.
What are some classroom Halloween party activity ideas?
Set Copies to the number of students you have, up to 30. Each copy has the same words in a different order with different scrambles, labelled Version 1, Version 2 and so on, so neighbours are not working on the same sheet. Set Font size to Large for younger readers. You can also display the puzzle on a screen and solve it together, using Check all and the progress line, which shows counts such as “7 of 10 solved”.
Can I add my own spooky words?
Yes. Click My words and type up to 200 entries into the Your words box, each up to 30 characters long. You can use letters, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes. Entries that cannot be used are listed with the reason, such as too long, other characters, fewer than 2 letters, already in the list, or cannot be scrambled into a different order.
Will the Halloween word scramble print in black and white?
Yes. Printed sheets use black text on a white background, so they print well on a black and white printer. Choose Letter or A4 paper, then click Print / Save PDF. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF if you want a file instead of paper.
How do I get a new Halloween word scramble with the same settings?
Click New puzzle. The tool makes a new random scramble and word choice using your current settings. To come back to a puzzle later, use Copy link, which reopens that exact puzzle.
