Word scrambles to make, print and solve

Difficult Word Scramble

Long, hard words to unscramble, no hints unless you ask for one. Play online or print the sheet.

This free difficult word scramble gives you a set of long words with their letters jumbled, and your task is to rearrange each set into the correct word. It runs in your browser, and there is no account or sign-up. Nothing you type is uploaded. The default setting is Hard (8+ letters), so you start with the difficult version right away.

The tool has 52 lists and about 2,400 words, grouped as topics, holidays, science, kids, hard words and spelling. You can also type your own words in My words. You can solve the puzzle on screen, using hints and a timer, or print worksheets with an answer key. It works on phones and tablets.

How to play a difficult word scramble

  1. Under Word source, choose Topic list and pick a chip. For more choices, open More lists and select a list such as Hard Words or Long Animal Names. To use your own words, select My words and type them into Your words, one per line or separated by commas or semicolons.
  2. Set Difficulty to Hard (8+ letters). This setting applies to topic lists only. Under Letters per word, leave Any number or choose an exact length from 4 to 8.
  3. Set Mixing to Shuffle all letters for the full challenge. Choose Keep first and last letter if you want an easier version.
  4. Set Hint to No hint for the hardest version, or choose First letter or First and last letter for support.
  5. Set Number of words from 5 to 40.
  6. Type each answer into its box and press Enter or Check. Press Hint to reveal one more starting letter each time. Press Show answer if you are stuck.

Your progress appears as a line such as “7 of 10 solved”. When every word is solved, the tool shows the time taken. Turn on Word bank to show all answers in mixed order under the puzzle. To print, use Print / Save PDF and choose Save as PDF in the browser’s print dialog. New puzzle creates a new scramble with the same settings, and Copy link saves every setting so you can reopen the same puzzle.

What makes a word scramble hard?

Length is the main reason. Each extra letter multiplies the number of ways the letters can be arranged, so a long word has far more wrong orders than a short one. A 9-letter word with no repeated letters has 362,880 possible orderings, and a 12-letter word has 479,001,600.

Long words also give fewer small clues. A four-letter scramble can often be solved by trying a few combinations, but a longer one needs a plan. The tool’s scrambles follow fixed rules to keep the puzzles fair. The scrambled letters are always different from the original word, and the scramble is never another real English word made of the same letters. For words of 4 or more letters, at most half of the letters stay in their original place when possible.

How do you solve long scrambled words?

Work in stages rather than trying random orders. Start by looking for common endings and beginnings: suffixes such as -tion, -ment, -ness and -ing, and prefixes such as re- and un-. Once you have these, look for common letter pairs such as th, ch, ph and qu. Then fit the remaining letters into the gaps. For example, the tool scrambled KALEIDOSCOPE as IDKLOOPSCAEE: spotting SCOPE leaves K, A, L, E, I, D and O to arrange in front of it.

Write the letters down or sort them into groups, such as vowels and consonants. Test a guess by checking that it uses exactly the same letters. If a guess fails, cross out the part you have ruled out and try a different ending or pair. Phrases are scrambled one word at a time, with the space left in place, so solve each word separately. When a word still will not come, press the Hint button under that word once: it reveals only its first letter, the rest of the puzzle stays hint-free, and one known letter often unlocks the whole ending.

Frequently asked questions

Is a word scramble for adults harder than one for kids?

The tool has no age setting, so you choose the difficulty yourself. The Hard difficulty uses words of 8 or more letters, and the Hard Words list uses 9 or more. Those lists suit adults and older learners. For a larger printed version, choose Font size: Large.

Can I time myself?

Yes. When you solve the puzzle on screen, the timer starts at your first action and shows the total time when every word is solved. Printed worksheets have no timer, so use a clock or phone. The word scramble game page has 60-second and 2-minute rounds if you want a fixed time limit.

Are the words I type checked against a dictionary?

No. Words you type yourself are not checked against a dictionary. For the built-in lists, the tool also accepts alternate answers. For example, ANGLE counts as correct when the list word is ANGEL. This applies to 341 of the 1,744 single-word list entries.

Why does a word scramble feel harder on paper than on screen?

On screen, you can use hints and see your progress as you go. On paper, you have no hints unless you print a word bank or key for checking. Start with a small number of words, around 5 to 10, and print the answer key to check your work.
