Jumble Solver
Type each jumbled word, tap the circled squares, and the solver works out the words and the final answer.
The Jumble Solver is a free tool that unscrambles jumbled words and works out the final answer of a Jumble newspaper puzzle. Use it as a jumbled words solver, word scramble solver, or letter scramble solver: type the scrambled letters and it lists every English word that uses exactly those letters, most common first.
The tool runs in your browser. Its dictionary of about 52,600 English words downloads once, when you first use the tool, and every search happens on your device. Nothing you type is uploaded. The solver also handles the two harder parts of a Jumble: the circled letters and the riddle at the bottom.
How to solve a Jumble puzzle with the solver
- In section 1, “The scrambled words,” type the letters of Scrambled word 1 into its row. Use 2 to 15 letters. Use ? for any letter you cannot read, up to 2 per row.
- Watch the list. Words appear as you type, most common first. Ten show at first; tap “Show more words” to see up to 50.
- If only one word fits, the tool chooses it for you. Otherwise, tap the right word.
- The chosen word appears as answer boxes. Tap a box to circle it, as in the newspaper. Tap it again to remove the circle.
- Repeat for each row. Start with the easiest word. Use “Add a word” for up to 8 rows, and “Remove” to delete a row.
- In section 2, “The final answer,” the “Circled letters” box fills in from your circles. Enter an “Answer pattern” such as 3 5, ___ _____, or A -. Check the line that says “N letters in the answer, M in the pattern.” The two numbers should match.
- Tap “Solve the final answer” or press Enter. Up to 50 phrases appear. Read the cartoon riddle and choose the phrase that fits.
- For a two-word split, use section 3, “Split letters into two words.” Enter the letters and, if you know them, the word lengths (for example, 4 4). Tap “Find word pairs.”
“Load an example” shows a sample puzzle whose circled letters spell HOT TEA. “Copy link” saves your rows, chosen words, circles, and pattern in one link you can share. “Clear all” resets the tool.
How does a Jumble puzzle work?
A Jumble has four scrambled words, and each one unscrambles to a single ordinary word. Some squares in each answer are circled, and the circled letters are scrambled again to form a riddle under a cartoon, often a pun, with blanks showing the word lengths. The tool follows the same order in its three sections. Jumble is a trademark of Tribune Content Agency, and this tool is independent of it.
How does the solver find a word from scrambled letters?
A scrambled word unscrambles to any dictionary word that uses exactly the same letters, each the same number of times. The solver checks its word list against your letters and shows only the words that match exactly. Typing ELPPA, for example, returns apple, because those five letters are the same as the letters in apple.
How do you solve the final answer of a Jumble?
Put the circled letters into the final answer, then narrow the list with the pattern. Fixed letters and hyphens in the pattern cut the list down quickly. A pattern of 3 3 with circled letters HOTTEA returns phrases like hot tea, which is the answer to the example puzzle. Read the cartoon’s pun before you choose, because the list alone does not show which phrase is meant.
Can it solve two-word answers?
Yes. A pattern such as 3 3 or ___ _____ returns two-word phrases, and section 3 splits a set of letters into two words. Enter the letters and optional word lengths, such as 4 4, then tap “Find word pairs” to see up to 50 splits.
What does the ? mean?
The ? stands for a letter you cannot read or do not know yet. Each row allows up to 2 question marks. Typing AP?LE returns 24 words, including place, apple, plane, plate, panel, and pearl, so you can see which letters would make a full word.
Why is the top answer not always right?
The list is ranked by how common each word is, not by how well it fits the joke. The HOTTEA example with pattern 3 3 lists eat hot, hot eat, hot ate, ate hot, and hot tea, but the riddle’s answer is HOT TEA. Read the cartoon clue, then pick the phrase that matches it. When a scrambled word has several matches, such as TNELSI giving listen, silent, enlist, inlets and tinsel, pick one and see whether its circled letters lead to a sensible final answer; if not, try the next.
Does it give today’s Jumble answers?
No. This page does not publish the answers to any day’s newspaper puzzle. You enter the letters from the puzzle yourself, and the tool finds the words that match them.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The dictionary of about 52,600 English words (plus a and i) downloads once, when you first use the tool. All searching happens on your device, and only the letters a to z are searched. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
