Word scrambles to make, print and solve

Scramble Letters (Word Scrambler)

Type or paste a word, name or text and get its letters scrambled instantly. Copy the result or scramble again.

Scramble letters in any word, name or text with this free tool: it puts the letters into a random order. Paste a word, a name or a full sentence into the “Your text” box, and the scrambled version appears as you type. It is a word scrambler, a name scramble maker and a jumbled letters generator in one page. It runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Teachers use it to make a word scramble line for a worksheet or quiz. Party hosts use it for a name scramble game, and puzzle makers use it to create test text. You can also use it to make a random letter order for an alphabet game. Each mode changes the text in a different way, so you can pick the one that fits your puzzle.

How to scramble letters in a word, name or text

  1. Type or paste your text into the “Your text” box. You can use up to 5,000 characters, and the counter shows how many you have used.
  2. Under “How to scramble”, pick a mode. The default is “Scramble the letters in each word”. The other options are “Keep first and last letters”, “Shuffle all the letters”, “Reverse each word” and “Shuffle the word order”.
  3. Under “Letter case”, choose “Keep capitals where they were”, “all lowercase” or “ALL CAPS”.
  4. Under “Keep punctuation where it is”, leave the box ticked to keep punctuation in place, or untick it to drop punctuation.
  5. If you chose “Shuffle all the letters”, you will see “Keep spaces where they are”. Untick it to remove the spaces.
  6. Click “Scramble again” to get a new random result.
  7. Click “Copy” to copy the result, or “Copy link” to share it. The link keeps your settings and up to 500 characters of text.

To work with a set of letters that is not a sentence, click “Jumbled alphabet” to see A to Z in random order. Click “New order” for another arrangement, or “Copy alphabet” to copy it. Click “Clear” to empty the text box and start again.

What does scramble letters mean?

To scramble letters means to put them in a random order. Jumbled letters means the same thing. The same letters stay in the text, but their positions change. For example, “Emma Johnson” becomes “Mmea Hjnosno” in the default mode.

The tool follows a few rules. Apostrophes inside words stay in place. A word is never left unchanged when it can change, so the tool tries again until the letters move.

Can you still read words with scrambled middle letters?

Often you can, but it depends on the word. The “Keep first and last letters” mode leaves the first and last letter of each word in place and moves only the middle letters. Readers can often recognise the word from its outline and length.

A text about this idea has circulated by e-mail since 2003. It claimed that research at Cambridge University showed this kind of text is easy to read. The university has no such study. Readability depends on word length and on which letters move. Short words and words where letter pairs stay together are easier to read. Words of two or three letters stay the same in this mode, because they have at most one middle letter. For example, “Reading scrambled words is easier than you think.” becomes “Rnaeidg smlbrcaed wrdos is easeir tahn you tnhik.” in this mode.

How do I scramble a name?

  1. Paste the name into the “Your text” box.
  2. Leave the mode on “Scramble the letters in each word”.
  3. Choose “Keep capitals where they were” so the capitals stay in their positions and the result still looks like a name.
  4. Click “Scramble again” until you like the result.

For example, “Emma Johnson” becomes “Mmea Hjnosno”. Each word is scrambled on its own, so a first name and a surname stay two separate words.

How do I get a jumbled alphabet?

Click “Jumbled alphabet” to see the letters A to Z in a random order, such as OYRNWDATBLSGQJKUXHCEZMIPVF. Click “New order” for a different arrangement. Use “Copy alphabet” to paste the order into a game, a worksheet or a note. Each order is random, so there is no set answer to check against.

Can I unscramble letters here?

No. This tool only mixes letters. It does not solve jumbles or show you the original words. To find the words hidden in a jumble, use the Jumble solver.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a limit on how much text I can scramble?

Yes, the “Your text” box holds up to 5,000 characters. The counter shows how much you have used.

Does the result update as I type?

Yes. The scrambled text changes as you type or edit the text, so you can see the result straight away.

Are numbers scrambled too?

Yes. Digits are mixed like letters, so “2024” can become a different order of the same digits.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Why does a short word look the same after scrambling?

In the “Keep first and last letters” mode, a word with only two or three letters has at most one middle letter, so it cannot change. In the other modes a word is never left unchanged when it can change; only words made of one repeated letter, such as “a” or “zz”, stay the same.

“Copy link” keeps your text up to 500 characters and your settings. Longer text is not included in the link, so copy the full result with “Copy” if you need all of it.

How do I get a different result for the same text?

Click “Scramble again”. Each click gives a new random order for the same text and settings.
