Printable Word Scramble Worksheets
Choose a topic, set the number of words and hints, and print a word scramble sheet with its answer key.
How to print a word scramble worksheet
- Choose your words. Click a chip under Topic list to use that list. The Mix of these chip uses all of the page’s lists together. To pick from every list on the site, open the More lists menu.
- To use your own words, click My words and type them in Your words. Put one word or phrase per line, or separate them with commas or semicolons. You can enter up to 200 entries of up to 30 characters each.
- Set Number of words between 5 and 40.
- For topic lists, pick a Difficulty. To use only words of one length, pick a number under Letters per word.
- Choose Mixing: Shuffle all letters, or Keep first and last letter for an easier puzzle.
- Choose a Hint setting: No hint, First letter, First and last letter, Number of letters, or Picture (for the picture lists for kids).
- In the print settings, set the Worksheet title, Paper size, Columns, Font size, and Copies.
- Turn on Include an answer key page. Turn on Word bank if you want the answers listed in mixed order under the puzzle.
- Click Print / Save PDF. In the browser’s print dialog, choose Save as PDF to keep a file.
To get a fresh scramble with the same settings, click New puzzle. To reopen this exact puzzle later, click Copy link. The link stores every setting, and any words you typed are kept in the part after the #.
How do I print a word scramble with the answer key?
Turn on Include an answer key page before you print. The tool then adds an answer page after each copy, listing each scrambled word beside its answer. If you only need the key, click Print answer key only.
Letter or A4, and how do I save it as a PDF?
Choose Letter (8.5 × 11 in) for US paper or A4 for most other countries. The layout is calculated so no page overflows on either size. To save a file, click Print / Save PDF and choose Save as PDF in the browser’s print dialog.
What topics are there?
The site has 52 lists, grouped as topics (such as animals, food, sports, and weather), holidays (such as Christmas, Halloween, and Easter), science (such as space, plants, and chemistry basics), kids, hard words, and spelling words for grades 2 to 5. Picture lists for kids show an emoji for every word. Pick a group in More lists to see its lists. Holiday lists suit seasonal classroom handouts, and the spelling lists for grades 2 to 5 turn a weekly word list into extra practice without any typing. Science lists such as space and earth science fit a unit review.
Can I print several different copies for a class?
Yes. Set Copies from 1 to 30. Each copy has the same words in a different order, with different scrambles, labelled Version 1, Version 2, and so on. Neighbours get different sheets, and each version gets its own answer page.
Can I make it larger for young children?
Set Font size to Large, and choose 1 column so each word has more room. Using fewer words also helps, because a long list spills onto a second page. For the easiest puzzles, pick Keep first and last letter, the First letter hint, or the Picture hint on a kids’ picture list.
Frequently asked questions
Can a scrambled word turn out to be a real word?
No. The tool never shows a scramble that is another real English word made of the same letters. HEART, for example, is never shown as EARTH.
Will the scrambled letters ever match the original word?
No. The scrambled letters are always different from the word. For words of four letters or more, at most half of the letters stay in their original place when possible.
What happens if I type a word the tool does not accept?
The tool lists each rejected entry with the reason, such as too long, other characters, fewer than 2 letters, or already in the list. Fix the entry and it will be used.
Can someone solve the puzzle on screen instead of on paper?
Yes. Each word shows as letter tiles with an answer box. Press Enter or click Check, use Hint to reveal one more starting letter, or click Show answer. If you type a different real word that uses the same letters, such as ANGLE for ANGEL, it counts as correct.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The tool works on phones and tablets, and printing works from any browser.
