Word scrambles to make, print and solve

St. Patrick's Day Word Scramble

Unscramble St. Patrick's Day words online, or print the puzzle with an answer key. There is an easier list for kids.

This free St. Patrick’s Day word scramble tool builds a puzzle of jumbled letters that you can print or solve on screen. Words come from built-in lists about shamrocks, leprechauns, rainbows, Irish places and more, or from words you type yourself. Each puzzle is made fresh, so you can create as many versions as you need.

The tool runs in your browser, with no account and no sign-up. It also works on phones and tablets, and you can print from any browser. If you want an Irish word scramble or a St. Patrick’s Day scramble with words of your own, the same settings cover both. Everything you make here is free to use in class or in products you sell, such as Etsy printables or Teachers Pay Teachers resources.

How to make a St. Patrick’s Day word scramble

  1. Pick your words. Under Topic list, click a chip: St. Patrick’s Day, St. Patrick’s for Kids, or Spring. Choose Mix of these to use all of them. To use your own, click My words and type one word or phrase per line, or separate entries with commas or semicolons.
  2. Set Number of words. Choose from 5 to 40 per sheet. The default is 12.
  3. Set Difficulty and Letters per word. For topic lists, pick Easy, Medium, Hard, or Any length. To fix the length, choose exactly 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 letters.
  4. Choose Mixing. Pick Shuffle all letters, or Keep first and last letter for an easier puzzle.
  5. Choose a Hint setting. Pick No hint, First letter, First and last letter, or Number of letters.
  6. Set the answer options. Turn on Word bank if you want the answers in a jumbled list under the puzzle. Uppercase letters is on by default.
  7. Set the print options. Type a Worksheet title, then choose Paper size (Letter or A4), Columns, Font size, Copies (1 to 30) and Include an answer key page.
  8. Print. Click Print / Save PDF. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF if you want a file.

Use New puzzle to get a new scramble with the same settings. Print answer key only prints the key alone. Copy link saves every setting and the puzzle number, so the same puzzle reopens later.

Is there a St. Patrick’s Day word scramble with answers?

Yes. Turn on Include an answer key page to get a key after each copy, or click Print answer key only to print the key alone. Turn on Word bank to show every answer in mixed order under the puzzle.

When you solve online, each word appears as letter tiles with an answer box. Press Enter or Check to see “Correct!” or “Not quite. Try again.” Hint reveals one more starting letter each time you press it, and Show answer reveals the word. Check all and Reveal all work on the whole puzzle, and the progress line shows results such as “7 of 10 solved.” The timer starts at your first action and shows the time taken when every word is done.

The tool follows a few rules when it scrambles a word. The scrambled letters are always different from the word. The scramble is never another real English word made of the same letters, so HEART is never shown as EARTH. For words of 4 or more letters, at most half the letters stay in their original place when possible. For example, SHAMROCK becomes MKARHOCS and RAINBOW becomes RBIANWO. Phrases such as pot of gold are scrambled one word at a time, and the spaces stay in place.

Typing a different real word with the same letters also counts as correct. For example, ANGLE is accepted for ANGEL. This applies to 406 of the 2,135 single-word list entries. Words you type yourself are not checked against a dictionary.

Is there an easy St. Patrick’s Day word scramble for kids?

Choose the St. Patrick’s for Kids list, set Difficulty to Easy (3–5 letters), set Hint to First letter, and set Mixing to Keep first and last letter. Only the middle letters move in this mode, which makes each word easier to solve.

The kids’ list has 45 shorter words, including green, gold, luck, hat, pot, jig, harp, boots, and bagpipe. Keep the Number of words low, such as 5 to 8, so a young solver can finish the sheet. Choose Letters per word set to 4 if you want only single words of one length. Turn on Word bank to give a child a list of answers to check against.

How do I use it as a March classroom activity?

St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17, so a March lesson can use the St. Patrick’s Day lists directly. Choose Mix of these to combine all three lists in one puzzle.

Set Copies to the number of students who need a sheet. Each copy has the same words in a different order with different scrambles, labelled Version 1, Version 2, and so on. Handing out different versions to neighbours means the sheets do not match. Choose 2 columns to save paper, or Large font for younger readers. Keep Name and date line on so students can record their work. Students can also solve the puzzle on screen, and the timer shows how long it took.

Can I print it in green?

No. The tool does not have a colour setting, and printed sheets are black text on white.

To get a green sheet, load green paper into your printer if it accepts coloured paper. Otherwise, print the black-and-white sheet and add colour by hand or with a colour pen. The words and scrambles stay the same either way.
