Summer Word Scramble is a free tool that builds scrambled-letter puzzles from summer words such as sunshine, beach, watermelon and campfire. You can print the puzzle as a worksheet or solve it on screen in your browser.

It runs entirely in the browser, so there is no account or sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded. It works on phones and tablets as well as computers. Use it to make a summer word scramble printable sheet for a class, a camp or a family trip, or a beach word scramble that people solve on a screen.

The default puzzle has 12 words. You can change the word source, the number of words, the difficulty and the print layout before you make a sheet. Everything you make here is free to use at home, in class or in products you sell, such as Etsy printables or KDP activity books.

How to make a summer word scramble

  1. Under Word source, press Topic list. Tap the Summer chip, or tap Mix of these to combine Summer, Ocean, Travel and Fourth of July. For any other list, open More lists.
  2. Set Difficulty to Easy, Medium, Hard or Any length. To keep every word the same length, set Letters per word to exactly 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8.
  3. Set Number of words from 5 to 40.
  4. Under Mixing, choose Shuffle all letters or Keep first and last letter.
  5. Under Hint, choose No hint, First letter, First and last letter or Number of letters.
  6. Turn on Word bank if you want all answers in a jumbled list under the puzzle.
  7. Set the print options: Worksheet title, Paper size (Letter or A4), Columns, Font size, and Copies (1 to 30). Keep Include an answer key page on if you want a key.
  8. Press Print / Save PDF. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF to keep a file.

To use your own words, switch to My words and type one word or phrase per line, or separate them with commas or semicolons. Press Copy link to save every setting and the puzzle number, so the same puzzle reopens later. Your own words are stored in the part of the link after the #.

What is a summer word scramble with answers?

A summer word scramble with answers is a set of summer words with their letters mixed up, plus a key that shows each correct word. The tool scrambles each word by its own rules, so the answers can be checked afterwards.

The scrambled letters are always different from the word, and the scramble is never another real English word made of the same letters. For words of 4 or more letters, at most half the letters stay in their original place when possible. A word such as LEMONADE becomes DOLEMAEN, and SANDCASTLE becomes SADCLSNAET. A phrase is scrambled word by word, and the space stays in place.

Is there a summer camp or road trip word game?

Yes. The Summer list has camp words such as campfire, camping, hammock and sprinkler. The Travel list has road trip words such as passport, luggage, suitcase, airport, itinerary, souvenir and jet lag.

For a road trip, choose the Travel list. PASSPORT, for example, can appear as OPSSTRAP. For a camp, choose Summer, or use Mix of these to combine the lists in one puzzle. Use Copies to give each person a different version.

Does this tool make a beach and ocean word scramble?

Yes. The Ocean list has 46 words, including whale, dolphin, octopus, starfish, seahorse, coral, reef and lighthouse. The Summer list includes beach, seashell and sandcastle.

For a beach and ocean puzzle, choose Ocean, or use Mix of these with Summer. For younger players, set Difficulty to Easy, which uses words of 3 to 5 letters, such as whale, reef and coral.

Can kids play a summer word scramble on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Solving on screen works on phones and tablets, so no printer is needed. Each word appears as letter tiles with an answer box. Press Enter or Check to see “Correct!” or “Not quite. Try again.”

Hint reveals one more starting letter each time you press it. Show answer shows the word, and Check all, Reveal all and Show answers / Hide answers work on the whole puzzle. The progress line shows, for example, “7 of 10 solved,” and the timer shows how long the whole puzzle took once the first action is made.

Is there a summer word scramble printable I can make in several copies?

Yes. Choose Letter or A4 paper, one or two columns, and up to 30 copies. Each copy has the same words in a different order with different scrambles, labelled Version 1, Version 2 and so on.

Can I make it easier for young children?

Yes. Set Difficulty to Easy (3 to 5 letters) and Mixing to Keep first and last letter, so only the middle letters move. For hints, choose First letter or First and last letter. The Picture hint works only on the kids’ picture lists, not on the Summer, Ocean, Travel or Fourth of July lists.

Does the tool accept other correct words?

Yes, for list words that have alternates. If you type a different real word that uses exactly the same letters, such as ANGLE for ANGEL, it counts as correct and the message names the list word. Words you type yourself are not checked against a dictionary.
