Word scrambles to make, print and solve

Valentine Day Word Scramble

Unscramble Valentine's Day and love words online, or print the word scramble with an answer key.

This free Valentine Day word scramble gives you a ready-made puzzle of scrambled words such as heart, cupid, chocolate and roses. You can solve it online, where each word appears as letter tiles with an answer box, or print it as a worksheet with an answer key. It runs in your browser, so there is no account or sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded. The main list, Valentine’s Day, has 44 words. The Love Words list has 46 more, including romance, affection, cherish and tender. A puzzle has 12 words by default, and you can set anything from 5 to 40 per sheet. It also works on phones and tablets.

How to make a Valentine’s Day word scramble

  1. Under Topic list, tap the Valentine’s Day chip. To combine it with Love Words, tap the ‘Mix of these’ chip.
  2. Set Difficulty to Easy (3–5 letters), Medium (5–7), Hard (8+) or Any length.
  3. If you want every word to be the same length, set Letters per word to 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8. This uses single words only.
  4. Pick a Mixing option. ‘Shuffle all letters’ is the standard choice. ‘Keep first and last letter’ is easier, because only the middle letters move.
  5. Pick a Hint option: No hint, First letter, First and last letter, or Number of letters.
  6. Set Number of words, from 5 to 40 per sheet.
  7. Open the print settings. Enter a Worksheet title, or leave it empty for an automatic title. Choose the paper size (Letter or A4), the number of columns, the font size and the number of copies (1 to 30).
  8. Turn on ‘Include an answer key page’ if you want answers after each copy. Turn on ‘Word bank’ if you want the answers listed in a jumbled order under the puzzle.
  9. Click ‘Print / Save PDF’. In the browser’s print dialog, choose Save as PDF to keep a file.

Use ‘New puzzle’ to get a fresh scramble with the same settings. ‘Copy link’ saves every setting and the puzzle number, so the same puzzle reopens later. Words you type yourself are stored in the part of the link after #. ‘Print answer key only’ prints just the answers.

Valentine word scramble with answers: how checking works

When you solve online, type your answer and press Enter or Check. The tool replies “Correct!” or “Not quite. Try again.” Each press of Hint shows one more starting letter, and Show answer reveals the word. The buttons Check all, Reveal all and Show answers/Hide answers work on the whole puzzle.

Some words have other real words made of the same letters. For example, ANGLE is accepted for ANGEL. The tool accepts these alternates and names the list word in its message. This applies to 341 of the 1,744 single-word list entries. Words you type yourself are not checked against a dictionary.

How hard is a Valentine’s word scramble?

Difficulty depends mainly on word length. Easy words have 3 to 5 letters, Medium words have 5 to 7, and Hard words have 8 or more. Keep first and last letter makes a puzzle easier, because the outer letters stay put. Hints add more help, from a first letter to the full word length.

The tool follows three scramble rules. The scrambled letters are never the same as the word. The scramble is never another real English word made of the same letters, so HEART is never shown as EARTH or HATER. For words of 4 or more letters, at most half the letters stay in their original place when possible. Phrases are scrambled one word at a time, and the space stays. A shuffled ELEPHANT might look like ALNHPTEE, while with Keep first and last letter it might look like ELANPEHT.

Can I put names in a Valentine’s word scramble?

Yes. Open ‘My words’ and type names into the ‘Your words’ box, one per line or separated by commas or semicolons. You can enter up to 200 entries of up to 30 characters. Letters, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are allowed. The tool lists any entry it cannot use and gives the reason: too long, other characters, fewer than 2 letters, already in the list, over 200 entries, or cannot be scrambled into a different order. Check that list to see which names were left out.
