Word Scramble for Adults
Grown-up word scrambles with longer words and no hints unless you want one. Solve online or print with an answer key.
This free word scramble for adults tool makes printable worksheets and online puzzles in which the letters of each word are shuffled for you to unscramble. It draws on 63 lists of about 3,000 words, including Vocabulary Builder, Travel, Hard Words, Food and Christmas Traditions, or you can type in your own words. You can set the length, difficulty and hints, so the same tool works for a hard word scramble for adults or a gentler one for seniors.
It runs in your browser with no account or sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded. It works on phones and tablets. Everything you make here is free to use in products you sell, such as KDP puzzle books or Etsy printables.

How to make a word scramble for adults
- Choose your words. Click a chip under Topic list, or open More lists to see all 63 lists. To use your own words, select My words and type them into Your words, one word or short phrase per line, or separated by commas or semicolons.
- To use every list on this page at once, pick Mix of these.
- Set Number of words from 5 to 40. The page starts with 15.
- On topic lists, set Difficulty. Set Letters per word if you want every word to be a set length.
- Choose Mixing: Shuffle all letters for the full challenge, or Keep first and last letter for an easier puzzle.
- Choose a Hint setting, or leave it at No hint.
- In the print settings, set Font size to Large for bigger text, choose Columns, set Copies from 1 to 30, and turn on Include an answer key page if you want answers.
- Click Print / Save PDF. In the browser’s print dialog, choose Save as PDF to keep a file.
Turn on Word bank to show all answers in mixed order under the puzzle. Click New puzzle for a fresh scramble with the same settings. To keep the exact puzzle, click Copy link, which stores every setting and the puzzle number.
How are the letters scrambled?
The letters of each word are shuffled into a new order, and the scrambled version is always different from the original word. The tool also never shows a scramble that is itself another real English word made from the same letters, so HEART is never shown as EARTH.
For words of four or more letters, at most half of the letters stay in their original place when possible. With Shuffle all letters, PASSPORT becomes OPSSTRAP and SERENDIPITY becomes ERSNPIDYTEI. With Keep first and last letter, only the middle letters move, which makes the word easier to rebuild.
A phrase such as candy cane is scrambled one word at a time, and the space stays in place.
How do you solve a word scramble?
Start with the letter groups that look like common beginnings and endings, then rearrange the rest until a real word appears. Type your answer into the box and press Enter or Check. The tool replies “Correct!” or “Not quite. Try again.”
If you are stuck, press Hint to reveal one more starting letter each time, or press Show answer. Check all, Reveal all and Show answers work on the whole puzzle. The progress line, such as “7 of 10 solved”, updates as you go, and the timer starts with your first action.
Some answers have alternates. If the list word is ANGEL and you type ANGLE, which is another real word made from the same letters, it counts as correct and the message names ANGEL. This applies to 406 of the 2,135 single-word list entries. Words you type yourself are not checked against a dictionary.
How hard are these word scrambles?
Difficulty depends mainly on word length and on how the letters are mixed. On topic lists, Easy uses words of 3 to 5 letters, Medium uses 5 to 7 letters, and Hard uses 8 or more letters. Any length mixes all of these. The Hard Words list has 53 words of 9 to 14 letters, while Vocabulary Builder includes words such as serendipity and quintessential.
To make a puzzle harder, use Shuffle all letters, no hint, no word bank, and Difficulty set to Hard. To make it easier, use Keep first and last letter or a First letter hint. Setting Letters per word to exactly 8 gives only single words of that length.
Are word scrambles good for seniors?
Word scrambles are a pastime that exercises vocabulary and attention, because you have to recall spellings and focus on the order of the letters. They are a relaxed activity for anyone who enjoys word games, and the easier settings let a player set a slower pace.
This tool does not make health claims. Treat a word scramble as an enjoyable puzzle rather than a way to improve health.
