Word scrambles to make, print and solve

Easy Word Scramble for Kids

Short words, big letters and picture hints. Play on screen or print an easy word scramble sheet.

This is a free easy word scramble maker for kids. It takes a list of words, mixes up the letters of each one, and gives children a puzzle to unscramble, either on screen or as a printable worksheet. It runs in your browser with no account or sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded.

The page opens in kids mode with large letter tiles, Easy difficulty (words of 3 to 5 letters), picture hints, and 8 words. You can pick from the Topic list (Animals, Food, Things, or Spelling Words, Grade 2) or type your own words, such as a spelling list from school. Children can solve the puzzle on screen, or you can print it as a word scramble worksheet. The tool works on phones and tablets too.

How to make an easy word scramble for kids

  1. Choose the words. The Topic list is selected by default. Tap a list chip such as Animals (with pictures). To use your own words, select ‘My words’ and type them into ‘Your words’, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. Keep the difficulty easy. Set ‘Difficulty’ to Easy (3–5 letters). Leave ‘Letters per word’ on Any number.
  3. Pick the mixing. Choose ‘Keep first and last letter’ so only the middle letters move.
  4. Pick a hint. Choose Picture for pre-readers (picture lists only), or First letter or First and last letter for early readers.
  5. Set the number of words. Use ‘Number of words’ (5 to 40 per sheet).
  6. Turn on the word bank. Tick ‘Word bank (answers in a jumbled list)’ so children have answers to match.
  7. Set the print options. Add a ‘Worksheet title’, choose Paper size (Letter or A4), Columns (1 or 2), and Font size (Large for young readers). Set ‘Copies’ and keep ‘Include an answer key page’ on if you need one.
  8. Print or save. Click ‘Print / Save PDF’. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF if you want a file.

To get a new scramble with the same settings, click ‘New puzzle’. To keep this exact puzzle, click ‘Copy link’. The link stores every setting, and any words you typed are stored after the # in the link. For on-screen play, children type each answer and press Enter or ‘Check’, and ‘Hint’ reveals one more starting letter each time.

What age can kids do word scrambles?

The tool sets difficulty by word length, not by age. Easy uses words of 3 to 5 letters, so a child who can read short words and knows the alphabet can start there. Once children solve those with ease, Medium (5–7 letters) and Hard (8+ letters) add longer words.

How do picture hints work?

With the Picture hint, each word shows its emoji, such as 🐱 for cat or 🐶 for dog. Children who cannot read yet can guess the word from the picture and then build it from the scrambled letters. The Picture hint only works on the picture lists for kids (Animals, Food and Things), because every word on those lists has an emoji.

Can I use my child’s spelling words?

Yes. Select ‘My words’ and type up to 200 entries, each up to 30 characters long. Letters, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are allowed. If an entry cannot be used, the tool lists it with the reason, such as too long, other characters, fewer than 2 letters, already in the list, or cannot be scrambled into a different order. Phrases such as candy cane are scrambled word by word, and the space stays in place.

How to make it easier?

Use ‘Keep first and last letter’ so only the middle letters move. For example, ELEPHANT might become ELANPEHT, where the E and T stay in place. Compare that with a fully shuffled ELEPHANT, which becomes ALNHPTEE. Add a hint such as First and last letter, which shows e______t for elephant. Turn on the word bank and set Letters per word to 4 for the shortest words. The scrambles follow a few rules that also keep puzzles fair. The scrambled letters always differ from the original word. A scramble is never another real word made of the same letters, so HEART is never shown as EARTH. For words of 4 or more letters, at most half of the letters stay in their original place when possible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I print different versions of the same worksheet?

Yes. Set ‘Copies’ from 1 to 30. Each copy has the same words in a different order with different scrambles, labelled Version 1, Version 2, and so on. With the answer key on, each copy gets its own answer page after it.

What if a child types a different word that uses the same letters?

If the answer is a different real word made of exactly the same letters, it counts as correct, and the message names the list word. For example, ANGLE is accepted when the list word is ANGEL. For words you type yourself there is no alternate list, so only the word as you typed it counts as correct.

Why was one of my words not added to the puzzle?

The tool lists each entry it cannot use along with the reason. Common reasons are that the entry is too long (over 30 characters), has characters other than letters, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes, has fewer than 2 letters, is already in the list, or cannot be scrambled into a different order. Fix the entry and it will be included.

What happens if a list does not have enough words of the length I chose?

The tool adds words from the other lists in the same group. An info line tells you when this happens, so you know some words came from another list.
