Word Scramble with Answers
Every jumbled word comes with its answer. Hide the answers to play, or print the puzzle with a separate answer key.
A word scramble with answers is a jumbled-word puzzle that shows the answer for every word, and this free tool makes them, so every puzzle comes with its word scramble solutions; use it as a worksheet maker, a quiz or a self-checking game. It runs in your browser, with no account and no sign-up. You choose the words, and the tool scrambles the letters of each one.
The word lists cover 52 lists and about 2,400 words, grouped as topics, holidays, science, kids, hard words and spelling. You can also type your own words. Each puzzle shows the answer under every scrambled word by default on this page, so you can check your unscrambling of the letters at a glance. If you want to solve first, you can hide the answers with one press.
How to use a word scramble with answers
- Choose your words. Under Topic list, press a chip such as Animals or Food. The Mix of these chip uses all of the page’s lists together. For more choices, open the More lists menu. To use your own words, switch to My words and type them in the Your words box.
- Set Number of words from 5 to 40.
- For topic lists, set Difficulty: Easy (3–5 letters), Medium (5–7), Hard (8+), or Any length. To use one exact length, set Letters per word.
- Under Mixing, choose Shuffle all letters for the full challenge, or Keep first and last letter for an easier puzzle.
- Under Hint, choose the help you want: No hint, First letter, First and last letter, Number of letters, or Picture (for the kids’ picture lists).
- Turn on Word bank if you want all the answers listed in mixed order under the puzzle.
- Press Hide answers to solve first. Press Show answers to bring them back.
- To print, press Print / Save PDF. In the browser’s print dialog, choose Save as PDF if you want a file.
New puzzle gives you a new scramble with the same settings. Copy link saves every setting and the puzzle number, so the same puzzle reopens later.
What if I find a different word with the same letters?
The tool never shows a scramble that is itself another real English word, so a jumble of HEART will never appear as EARTH. When you solve online, the tool also accepts other real words that use exactly the same letters. For example, ANGLE counts as correct when the list word is ANGEL. Of the 1,744 single-word list entries, 341 have such alternates. The message tells you which list word it was.
Words you type yourself are not checked against a dictionary, so for them only the word you typed counts as the answer.
How do I check one word at a time?
Type your answer in the box under the letter tiles, then press Enter or Check. The tool replies “Correct!” or “Not quite. Try again.” If you are stuck, press Hint to reveal one more starting letter each time. Show answer reveals the word. The progress line, such as “7 of 10 solved”, shows how far you have got, and the timer starts at your first action.
The scrambles follow a few rules. The letters are always in a different order from the word. For words of 4 or more letters, at most half of the letters stay in their original place when possible. In a phrase such as candy cane, each word is scrambled separately and the space stays where it is.
Why start with the answers showing?
Seeing the answer first turns the puzzle into a study sheet. A learner reads ELEPHANT, looks at its scramble ALNHPTEE, and traces where each letter went, which is a gentle way to practise spelling before trying a fresh puzzle with Hide answers. Teachers and parents can also check a child’s work at a glance, because each scrambled word and its answer sit together on the screen. When you are ready for a real test, press New puzzle, hide the answers and solve from scratch.
Frequently asked questions
Where are the answers, and how do I hide them?
On this page, the answers appear under each scrambled word. Press Hide answers to turn them off so you can solve first. Press Show answers to bring them back.
Can I print the answer key on a separate page?
Yes. Turn on Include an answer key page, and each printed copy is followed by a page listing every scrambled word and its answer. To print only the keys, press Print answer key only.
Why do answer keys matter for teachers?
An answer key lets students check their own work, so you do not need to mark every sheet. Keys are also useful for a quick review at the end of a lesson.
Can I use this to solve a newspaper jumble?
Not here. This page makes its own puzzles and does not give the answers to newspaper or app puzzles of the day. For a Jumble from a newspaper, use the Jumble solver page.
Does it work on a phone and does it need an account?
It works on phones and tablets. You do not need an account or a sign-up. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.
